The Sleeve Should Be Illegal

In celebration of the museum’s 85th anniversary, The Frick Collection and DelMonico Books/D.A.P. published The Sleeve Should Be Illegal & Other Reflections on Art at the Frick, a book of short essays by a diverse list of noted creative people responding to works in the Frick’s collection.

The sixty-two contributors to The Sleeve Should Be Illegal are all highly accomplished from a diverse range of noted fields of writers, artists, musicians, and more. Such as: George Condo, Mark Morris, Bryan Ferry, Carter Brey, Annabel Seldorf, Agnes Gund, Robert Wilson. . .  Each essay is a personal musing the contributor’s chosen work at the Frick.

The design challenge here was to form an experience that felt personal, like reading a novel, but visually expressive as a visual art book. Each contribution needed to be accompanied by the selected work of art, and in several cases, was repeated. I used this as an opportunity to show a range of detail of some works.

Published by the Frick Collection, 2021, hardbound with jacket, 168 pages, 25.4 × 21.6 cm. Foreword by Adam Gopnik, conceived and edited by Michaelyn Mitchell.
