There is nothing more poignant than to witness first-hand nature’s primal, elemental energy in the wild. This book, an introduction to the Grumeti Wildlife Reserve in Tanzania, is about bringing the reader to that experience. The Reserve’s resort and lodges, located in the stunning Serengeti, finances its wildlife trust, and the book is meant to offer a glimpse—an expansive, romantic glimpse—of what it is like to stay there. In addition to designing the book, I went on location in order to art-direct the photography as well as to absorb what I would be relating with this volume. The horizontal format of the book, and the pages’ many full bleeds reflect the powerful yet sublime expanse of the landscape. The uncoated stock and muted colors approximate the experience of the light on the land, and what it looks like to witness this explorer’s paradise first-hand, in the spirit of Karen Blixen and Out of Africa. In addition to the original photography, many found and historical images were used to touch upon the history of the place, including Tanzania’s troubled colonial past.
